I'm curious about the time it takes to become a bodybuilder, aiming to compete on stage with strict training and following a calorie-specific regimen. How long would it roughly take for someone whose body isn't in great shape to become stage-ready? I want to achieve this without excessively using substances that could harm my health.

Bodybuilding has been on my bucket list, but I haven't been consistent lately, especially in the past few years. I'm 29 now—am I too late to start?

It is never too late to start bodybuilding and working towards the stage. There is even a masters 50+ class so you still got plenty years to go. You can even compete at 80 if you want to.

Losing all body fat can be achieved within a maximum of 8 weeks, allowing for potential participation in a stage competition within 2 months. However, building enough muscle to achieve an impressive and noticeable physique requires a much longer period of dedicated effort, spanning a minimum of 3 to 5 years.

Achieving full muscle maturity often takes over a decade of consistent hard work and dedication.

It can take a while to look good, not just for bodybuilding standards but for everyone's expectations. Your genetics can determine if you'll excel as a bodybuilder or not. Some people are born with better genes, similar to athletes who have natural advantages.
