The evidence suggests that eating late is generally not great for you. While it can make you sleepy, it seems to reduce sleep quality. This makes sense because you're adding mass and fluid to your stomach, then lying down, which puts pressure on the LES (lower esophageal sphincter), which isn't good for your body.
Generally, it's good to leave at least 1 hour between your last bite and sleep. 2 hours is even better.
However, it doesn't seem to be life-threatening. It's just not ideal or potentially slightly harmful to some stomachs.
