Last night at the gym was a humbling experience for me

It was my first time doing free weights and machine lifting in almost ten years. I knew I wasn't particularly strong, but I had a good idea of what I could and couldn't lift from my day-to-day activities.

I worked with a trainer who had me do a push day. We started with the bench press until failure, then moved on to a chest/shoulder machine until failure. Next, we moved to a shoulder machine where I was pushing up instead of out, and initially, I thought it would be easy. However, about a third of the way through the first set, my arms ran out of gas. I could get the weight halfway up just fine, but once my triceps came into play, I had nothing left. It was frustrating to know I could do something, but my muscles just weren't cooperating.

Don't worry, your strength will come back quickly! 😊 I've had a very similar experience every time I start up again. As an ex gymnast, I know the muscles are there, but it's like they're not ready to come out of hibernation

I had a similar experience when the trainer said we would do pull-ups next. I said, "I think I can do one or two." She responded, "Oh, you can do one?" I was a bit surprised she was surprised. However, when I tried to do a single pull-up, I failed halfway up. So now I do negatives. It was definitely humbling.

You'll bounce back quickly. Depending on how often you lift, you'll have about 3 weeks of soreness, then suddenly you'll be adding 5 pounds per lift session. Two years ago, after a 7-year break from the gym, I could barely deadlift 250 pounds. Last week, I hit a personal record for my age. Progress comes quickly and it's addicting! Keep up the great work!
